Reading Tip of the Month Do you think second graders are too old to be read to? ABSOLUTELY NOT! Reading aloud to your child is still VERY important. Please check out this quick video that explains WHY it is so important! |
Writing: Opinion Writing This week we jumped into opinion writing! Students have learned the difference between a fact and opinion and the importance of stating reasons to support their claim. Over the next several weeks, students will writing opinions about the best thing to play at recess and the best place to visit in Louisville. Lastly, we will be using facts from our upcoming field trip and class studies to write an opinion about if you would rather be a kid or a coal miner in Louisville long ago. Students will be sharing these stories and dressing up as a coal miner or kid in December. |
Math
We have begun Unit 2- Addition to 200! In this math unit, students are learning the importance of place value. They have learned to draw proof drawings of numbers using hundred boxes, ten sticks, and one circles, write number names, and use expanded form. Students are using this knowledge to learn how to add double-digit numbers. We are learning how to make new tens and new hundreds formerly known as regrouping/carrying. This is a new skill, so please be patient with your child as they learn this new concept. Also, be sure to ask them what their favorite strategy is (proof drawings, expanded form, number line, new groups above/below, or show all totals). They may even be able to teach you a new strategy!

Social Studies
Do you know much about Louisville long ago? Your second grader sure will! After learning about communities in first grade, this year students learn how communities change and grow over time. This week we started with identifying what makes a community. Next week we will investigate how they change over time. We will look closely at our own community through the lens of its history. We will take a field trip to the Louisville Historical Museum in November to help deepen our understanding of our community.
