Reader's Workshop
In second grade, students' reading habits change. You will notice that your second grader transitions from learning to read to reading to learn. In second grade we focus on developing phonics, accuracy, fluency, automaticity, reading comprehension, and vocabulary,. The Components of our Reader's Workshop are: Reading mini-lesson: lessons taught whole group based on reading strategies and skills students need for reading. Independent Reading: students select books based on genre and interest to practice the skills. Reading conferences: we set individualized goals with students that they practice those goals during independent reading. Fundations: students will learn common spelling patterns and phonics skills Guided reading groups: focus on introducing and practicing strategies to meet student needs. Goals are based on individual reading assessments Shared reading: students experience reading a text together, practice fluency and are able to access more difficult texts Interactive read aloud: comprehension strategies are reinforced through student discussions before, during and after read aloud Writing In second grade we emphasis the writing process and engage students in a variety of genres of writing. Through mini-lessons and individual writing conferences students learn how to improve their craft. The Writing Process: Genres of Writing
Math We teach the district math program Math Expressions. Each unit begins with a pre-assessment, and ends with a post-test. For details on the math that will be learned in each unit, please see the "Month at a Glance" and the " How Can I Help My Child?" sections of the website. Social Studies/Science Unit 1: My Place in My Community : In this unit students are celebrating the diversity that can be found within a community inclusive of all living things (humans, plants, and animals). Students celebrate themselves, and share stories of their culture and the culture of those in their community. Then students think about the geographical physical boundaries of their community, and they use and create tools used to measure and represent geographic areas on a map. Students use the information they learn through cartography to create a map that shares important information and details about a member of their community. After that, students seek diversity to enrich their life experience. Students have multiple opportunities to compare plant and animal diversity of life in different habitats. In the last chunk of learning, students present their contribution to their community. They give helpful feedback to others to improve their contributions, while also listening and incorporating the feedback provided by peers.
